Default First service

Do you guys recomend the dealer doing the first service? not sure what is involved but thought they would tighten up everthing plus oil change. what else would they do? I plan on doing my own oil changes. I think im a little over 600 miles and have not ridden for a while since its friggen winter here. just trying to plan for spring as im sure the dealers are swamped. also what should I expect pay for a first service?

Get the service manual , a guy on here has it, or I can figure out how to email it to you. Do your own service. Look in your owners manual, I think it says oil change, look over everything to make sure its tight, adjust chain, balance fuel system. Dont worry about the fuel system, its electronic, your computer will put out a code it there is an issue. Other than that you can do all your own maintenance on this bike, as long as you have some mechanical ability!

Do your own, it's very simple. A dealer will charge you silly money. Major mark up on oil and filters, plus a whole bunch of other unnecesary crap. Have a look back on here through some of the posts, there is a great one on this topic.
I did mine at 500, 1000, 2000 and 3000. Now running full synthetic and will change every 3K.
Other stuff like chain lube, cable adjustments, tire pressures etc are all simple stuff.
Your waranty will not be void if you do your own maintaining. Just keep reciepts and records.

Get your first one done at the dealer for warranty purposes at least.
Anything goes wrong during the warranty period, at least you have your ass covered.
Drop your oil every 2500km's and servicing is every 10000km's so it's not like it'll break the bank getting your book stamped by the dealer.
Log book is always handy when selling or trading.

In the US, there is a consumer protection law that negates the warranty issue. Back in the late 60's, GM was sued for voiding warranties on vehicles that were "owner or non dealer repair shop serviced".
Since then, manufacturers cannot void a warranty if you do your own services, as long as you keep your reciepts and mileage info.

Mobil 1 has a great reputation, as long as you use the cycle branded one. As far as nuts n bolts, perhaps check caliper mountings, axle nuts and handlebar mounts, but I wouldn't worry too much.
Don't buy the factory oil filter either, way too expensive. Stick with Fram or other aftermarket. They are just as good.

100% true!! i work for a ford dealer in fixed ops (parts and service) and i can tell you that is the truth. it is up to the manufacturer to prove what you did is what caused the malfunction. i have sat in court and testified to what we discovered in the programming and what i have seen in the past with said product. in that case it didn't work to well for the customer but most of the time if you do what owners manual says and keep your reciepts you will be good!!

How about that? I didn't know that was the case for you guys in the US... In a way I suppose it's handy but it would also make buying second hand a bit trickier?
When I've bought second hand I'd buy with servicing log book and all receipts. Same as when I've sold a bike...Always sell faster with the service history.
